BUCKSPORT – Iris L. Cushing, 90, of Bucksport passed away on April 16, 2014, at home. She was born Nov. 9, 1923, to Helen and Lester Sutherland.
Iris grew up on a farm in Bucksport and loved telling stories of her many amusing experiences. During World War II she volunteered for the Armed Forces office in Portland by answering calls coming from all over to track planes and also became a hostess for the USO. Iris and her husband, Ronald, who predeceased her in 2004, met on a blind date and married on January 31, 1948. Iris said some of her happiest times were when she and Ron would go dancing at the Jed Prouty Inn in Bucksport. She liked to cook and delighted in trying new recipes for family and friends. In later years Iris loved nothing better than spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Christopher of Bucksport and daughters, Valorie Shaffner and her husband, Ray of Bucksport and Kimberly Landry and her husband, Lionel, of Allagash, a sister, Dallis Saunders of Bucksport, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
