APPLETON, Maine — A 60-year-old woman was found dead Tuesday night, and her bedridden husband was discovered on the floor.

The woman’s death appears to be from natural causes, Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison said. She added that the woman may have been dead for a couple days.

The older husband was bedridden but apparently tried to crawl for help, the sheriff said. There was no telephone in the residence.

The man was taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, but information about his condition was not immediately available Wednesday. The woman’s body was taken to a local funeral home, and Dennison said a medical examiner would likely examine her. She said there was nothing suspicious about the death.

The sheriff’s department was called when a friend from New Hampshire telephoned to report that she had been unable to contact the couple for a week.

Deputy Nathaniel Jack was the first officer to arrive at the residence, which is located on a long dirt road.

The identity of the couple and more information was not immediately available.
