BANGOR, Maine — Construction season kicked off Monday in the heart of downtown as crews cut through Bangor Alley, the first step in a major construction project in and around West Market Square.

Bangor Alley, which connects Broad Street to Kenduskeag Plaza West, will be closed periodically this week while crews dig test pits. In later phases, it will be shut down entirely, as will parts of Broad Street.

Broad Street, Bangor Alley, and portions of Main Street are all slated to be torn up to clear the way for replacement of underground water, sewer and other utilities infrastructure. The work is likely to cause headaches for businesses and commuters throughout the summer, but city officials say the infrastructure is at a breaking point and that the work offers the best opportunity to revamp West Market Square.

The visible portion of the renovation will be a modernization of West Market Square — new brickwork, wider sidewalks, benches, lighting, trees and more. The entire square essentially will be rebuilt from scratch. The total estimated cost of the project is about $1.27 million.

Construction equipment is lined up in parking spots along the Kenduskeag Stream, and likely remain in the area throughout the summer.
