BREWER, Maine — A $22.56 million budget for the Brewer School Department passed its first reading on Monday night in a unanimous vote by the Brewer School Committee.

There is still a $126,877 budget shortfall, which the board asked the administration to try to address with as small an impact as possible on instruction, Superintendent Jay McIntire said.

In its current state, the budget represents a 1.2 percent increase over last year’s budget.

McIntire said the board will meet to review the budget again and look for reductions on the expenditures side on April 14.
