ROCKLAND, Maine — A local restaurant has filed an application with the city to open a bakery and ice cream shop adjacent to its current business.

James Hatch and Susan Schiro filed the application Wednesday to renovate 19 North Main St. That one-and-a-half-story house with parking lot is adjacent to the rear of the couple’s restaurant — Home Kitchen Cafe at 650 Main St.

The application states that Hatch and Schiro want to open the new shop by June 1.

The Rockland Planning Board will review the proposal at its May 6 meeting.

The Rockland City Council approved a zone change at its March 10 meeting to allow the Home Kitchen owners to expand into the home. Zoning for the North Main Street lot changed from transitional business to commercial.
