DEER ISLE – Eric A. Sheard, 83, died at the Island Nursing Home, Deer Isle, Monday, 7th April, 2014.
A graduate of Belleville High School and Newark College of Engineering, he was owner and president of Lescon, Inc., which specialized in Liquid Elastomers and Polyurethanes. He was previously employed by Johns-Manville Engineering, Mansville, NJ, Thiokol Chemical Co., Trenton, NJ, and Henley & Co., NYC. A veteran of the US Army, he served in Germany for two years. Eric was a member and elder of the Flemington Presbyterian Church, Flemington, NJ, before moving to Maine where he joined the Deer Isle and Sunset Congregational Churches and served as moderator for nine years. He enjoyed singing in the Deer Isle and Sunset choirs and also sang with the Peter’s Cove Men’s Chorale and the Bagaduce Chorale in Blue Hill. He held the chairmanship of many church and professional committees. He was the past director of the Polyurethane Manufacturer’s Association, the New York Rubber Group and the Trenton Section of the American Chemical Society. Eric was an Eagle Scout and a 32nd degree Master Mason, formerly of the Grand Masonic Lodge in Trenton, NJ, and more recently of the Marine Masonic Lodge of Deer Isle. He was a Shriner and a member of the NJ Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, with whom he sang. He enjoyed sailing and skippered for many years with the Princeton Ski and Sail Club of Princeton, NJ. Chesapeake Bay and the Caribbean were favored spots, along with trips to Greece, Turkey, and Spain. A prolific reader of books, newspapers and trade magazines he loved to learn and solve complex problems, often drawing solutions and diagrams on the backs of napkins and envelopes. He loved to whistle or sing as he did chores around the house, yard and pool.
Eric is survived by his wife of 56 years, Norma Voorhees Sheard, a daughter, Beth Sheard of Saugus, MA, a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Lynn (Hotchkin) Sheard of Plainsboro, NJ, a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Adrienne (Sheard) and Aaron Howe of Honolulu, HI, a grandson, Glenn Sheard of Grand Rapids, MI, and numerous cousins in England. He was predeceased by his parents, Sydney Sheard and Doris (Heath) Sheard Robinson.
