SOUTHWEST HARBOR AND BROOKLYN, NY – Hannah Louisa Shaw, 29, died unexpectedly Friday, April 4, 2014, in Brooklyn, NY. She was born Sept. 24, 1984, in Bar Harbor, to Jane Tawney and Samuel Shaw. Hannah was a deeply caring daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend.

Hannah attended Pemetic Elementary School in Southwest Harbor, Mount Desert Island, Maine, and graduated from Mount Desert Island High School in 2003. She graduated from Hampshire College in 2007 with a concentration in Art and Innovation. Her final project at Hampshire was the debut of her first line of dresses of which her sister and best friends were the models. Hannah settled in Brooklyn, NY, in 2008 and thrived in the culture of art and music. Her creativity and talent shines through in all of her artistic work. She recently had been focusing on making bright, fun pieces of jewelry that are coveted by many. She was employed by the urban garden and landscaping company Jungle Design NYC which provided the perfect combination for her artistic and horticultural aesthetics. She had many friends and family members in and around New York City and particularly in the Brooklyn area. One of the most cherished qualities of her character is that she formed extraordinarily strong bonds with new friends that she valued and held. She made friends quickly and enjoyed being close to cousins in Brooklyn while still maintaining beautiful bonds with friends from all points in her life.

Hannah often returned to MDI to spend time in the park, be near the ocean and explore the beloved woodlands of Acadia. A favorite hike was through Fairyland, up the backside of Beech Mountain to the fire tower. Growing up on MDI, she became an accomplished trumpet player, practiced competitive swimming, and first discovered her passion for horticulture.

She is survived by her parents, Samuel Shaw of Northeast Harbor and Jane Tawney of Southwest Harbor; her sister, Lucy Shaw of Chicago, IL; paternal grandmother, Sally Clark of Southwest Harbor; maternal grandmother, Edna Tawney of Kansas City, MO; aunts and uncles, and dozens of cousins and countless friends considered as family.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2014 at St. Savior’s Episcopal Church, 41 Mt. Desert Street, Bar Harbor followed by a reception at the Abbe Museum. Memorial donations may be made in Hannah Shaw’s memory to Hampshire College Advancement, 893 West Street, Amherst, MA 01002. The family also welcomes relatives and friends to plant a new tree or flower garden in Hannah’s memory. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mt. Desert.
