LISBON, Maine — A 41-year-old man was arrested Sunday afternoon and charged with setting fire to his own house earlier that morning.
Michael D. Hersom was charged with arson after fire heavily damaged his home at 12 Huston St., according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Hersom, who was recently released from jail on an unrelated charge, according to McCausland, argued with his wife, who subsequently left the house with many of her belongings.
According to fire investigators, Hersom then set fire to her remaining belongings in the bedroom.
Lisbon Fire Chief Sean Gallipeau said Monday that firefighters arrived at 8:22 a.m. to find a well-involved fire in a rear bedroom
“We had it knocked down in about 10 minutes, but there was major smoke throughout the building,” he said.
The extent of the damage left the home unlivable.
No injuries were reported. A cat was able to escape from the building.
Gallipeau said the house was insured.
Hersom was arrested late Sunday afternoon and remained at Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on Monday. He was scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.
