Howard “Powdy” E. Small Jr.

ELLSWORTH – Howard “Powdy” E. Small Jr., 75, died March 30, 2014 at his home in Ellsworth. He was born July 30, 1938 in Hall Quarry, the son of Howard E. and Lulu Small.

Powdy was an auto mechanic all his life. He worked at Main Street CITGO for a number of years and spent 25+ years at Morrison Chevrolet. Powdy was an avid fan of NASCAR and liked going to Winterport Speedway with his son, Greg when he was racing. He enjoyed watching high school sports and the Red Sox. He was a member of the Ellsworth Lion’s Club. In his earlier years he spent time deer hunting with his friends. Powdy was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Powdy is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judith (Laffin) Small; a daughter, Kimberley J. Igoe and husband, Mike; 3 sons, Gregory Small and wife, Hilary and Howard E. Small III, all of Ellsworth and Mark Small and wife, Suzanne of Islesboro; a sister, Barbara; 7 grandchildren; Caitlin, Devin, Michael Jr., Noaha, Julia, Cassandra, Annie and Newell.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and staff of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital for the kindness they have showed Powdy over the years. A very special thank you goes out to Nelly, Angela, MaryEllen and Stephanie from Hospice, for their compassionate approach as caregivers.

A Celebration of Powdy’s Life will be held from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the Masonic Lodge, 21 Carriage Road, Ellsworth. The family encourages friends and loved ones to join them for refreshments and storytelling. Those who desire may make contributions in Powdy’s memory to the Ellsworth Lion’s Club, P.O.
