Alice H. Gardner

EAST MACHIAS – Alice (Holmes) Gardner, 93, wife of the late “Tart” Gardner, passed away April 2, 2014 at a Machias hospital. She was born June 15, 1920, the daughter of Earland and Beatrice (Ackley) Holmes.

Alice moved to East Machias to attend Washington Academy as a freshman, where she met her future husband “Tart”. graduating class of 1938 .Together they worked a lifetime side by side in everything they did ;including blueberry raking, gardening and their time working for Washington Academy. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of East Machias. They also greatly enjoyed their time spent at the lake, and with family and friends. She will also be sadly missed by her Tuesday lunch crowd.

She is survived by her son Richard L. Gardner and wife, Margaret; a grandson, Kevin A, Gardner and wife, Kim; her great-grandson, Patrick R. Gardner; two step-great-grandchildren, Trevor and Channing Jessiman; many nieces, nephews and cousins, including special cousins, Virginia McGuire and Lucius Schurman. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband of 70 years, Arthur W. “Tart” Gardner in 2010; a brother, Richard, and a sister, Phyllis Bruton. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Maine Veterans Home- Machias for the wonderful care she received there.
