ROCKLAND, Maine — A flare sighting off the coast in Knox County led to all-night search by ships and helicopters.

The search found no evidence of anyone in distress, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Justin Uyttewall of the Rockland Coast Guard station said Thursday morning.

The flare was spotted in the vicinity of Ash Island off Owls Head shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday and reported by phone to the Coast Guard. A Coast Guard ship searched the waters off Owls Head, South Thomaston and St. George, an area known as the Mussel Ridge Channel.

The ship was assisted later in the evening by two helicopters from the Coast Guard Cape Cod Station.

The search was ongoing at 8 a.m.
