ORLAND, Maine — A 21-year-old Franklin man died Monday afternoon in a two-car crash on U.S. Route 1, according to Maine State Police.

On Monday evening, Sgt. Alden Bustard of the Maine State Police identified the deceased man as Russell Burnett.

The sergeant said the crash occurred at about 4:10 p.m. Burnett was heading east and lost control of his 2006 Toyota Scion on Route 1, which was covered with slush and ice at the time, Bustard said.

The Scion crossed the center line and was struck broadside by a 2010 Toyota Camry driven by Shannon Flood, 49, of Bucksport, Bustard said.

Flood was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment of injuries that did not appear to be serious, Bustard said.

Although Burnett was not driving over the posted speed limit, police believe he was traveling too fast for the road conditions at the time, Bustard said.

Route 1 was reduced to one travel lane to allow police to investigate the accident. The road was reopened shortly after 6 p.m., Bustard said.
