MATTAWAMKEAG – Mildred Elmira McLaughlin Philbrook was born Aug. 29, 1916, in Medway, and went home to be with Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior, on March 27, 2014.

Mildred was raised with her ten brothers and sisters on a farm on the Penobscot River in Medway. She was a graduate of Schenck High School, where her attendance required a five mile walk one way…sun, rain or snow. Mildred’s rural upbringing, coincident with the years of the Great Depression, taught her, as many in her generation, the meaning of hard work, with nothing simply handed to her.

Miss McLaughlin became Mrs. Vernon Philbrook in 1935. In 1945, Vernon and Mildred purchased a farm on the River Road in Mattawamkeag, christened lovingly as “Bull Mountain.” Mildred lived on that farm for 69 years, before leaving it in February of this year.

Mildred was the oldest resident in the Town of Mattawamkeag. She was also a member of the Calvary Temple Assembly of God in East Millinocket.

Mildred was predeceased by parents, Ancil and Zelma McLaughlin; siblings, Harry, Lawrence, Gerald, Nellie, Muriel, Ralph, Roland, Flora, Ethel, and Carroll; husband, Vernon Moore Philbrook Sr.; daughter, Dawn Marie Philbrook Bertenshaw; and granddaughter, Cindi Luanne Adams. She is survived by daughter, Joanne “Joni” Adams and husband, Reggie; son, Vernon M. “Bud” Philbrook Jr. and wife, Roanne; grandchildren, Thomas and Jillian Bertenshaw, Reggie Adams Jr., Jerry Adams and wife, Trish, Danny Adams and wife, Olivia, Joel Philbrook and wife, Jessica, and Meredith Philbrook; and great-grandchildren, Hope, Isaac, Jada, Charles, Jack, and Brooklyn.

Services will be held Sunday, March 30, at Calvary Temple, 2 Orchard St., East Millinocket, with the Rev. Regginal Adams officiating. Visitation will be from 1:30-2:30 p.m., with the funeral service following at 2:30 p.m. Donations should be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Those who wish may sign an online register and leave written condolences at www.clayfuneralhome.com.
