Medway couple, trucking firm indicted in connection with deceptive sale of wood

BANGOR, Maine — A Medway couple and their company were indicted Wednesday by the Penobscot County grand jury for allegedly passing off mixed wood as cedar.

Ellen McLaughlin, 55, Jay R. McLaughlin, 56, and their firm McLaughlin’s Timber Trucking Inc. were indicted on two counts each of theft by unauthorized taking and theft by deception and 149 counts each of forgery.

Last year, the McLaughlins allegedly underpaid the owners of a Hartland woodlot by $11,000, then sold the wood for $51,000 more than it was worth by saying it was cedar, according to Penobscot County District Attorney R. Christopher Almy.

If convicted of the Class B crimes, the couple faces up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $20,000. The corporation could be fined up to $40,000. All three defendants could be ordered to pay restitution.

Jamie L. Brown, 34, Sullivan, failure to appear, violation of condition of release.

Scott E. Bullard, 25, Bangor, theft by deception.

Shane Colton Bussey, 20, Orono, burglary, theft by unauthorized taking.

Jesse Buxton, 27, Greenbush, theft by unauthorized taking, aggravated criminal mischief, receiving stolen property.

Michael S. Carter, 32, Trenton, assault.

Cassie Cates, 32, Topsfield, operating after revocation.

Maureen Clark, 41, Bangor, two counts of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, criminal operating under the influence of intoxicants.
