VASSALBORO – Steven Lantman Gaffney, 31, passed away on March 22, 2014, at home surrounded by family after a 4 and a half year battle with brain cancer. Steven was born May 21, 1982, in Burlington, Vt., the son of Robert and Lyn (Lantman) Gaffney.
He graduated from Champlain Valley Union High School in 2000 and attended Paul Smith’s College where he received a degree in Forestry and Recreation in 2002. On October 7, 2006, he married Sarah Kilch at Piazza Rock on Saddleback Mountain.
An avid outdoorsman, Steven worked for thirteen years in the trail work sector, primarily with the Maine Conservation Corps. He loved introducing others to the world of trail work and the beauty of Maine. In addition to professional trail work, Steven volunteered for many years with the Maine Appalachian Trail Club and he loved hiking, camping, and playing fetch with the dogs. His daughter Zoe was the light of his life.
Steven is survived by his wife, Sarah and three-year-old daughter, Zoe of Vassalboro; his parents, Robert and Lyn Gaffney of Williston, Vt.; his brother, sister-in-law, and nephew, Dan, Sarah, and Liam Gaffney of Syracuse, N.Y.; his grandmother, Claire Lantman of So. Burlington, Vt.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Barry and Linda Kilch of Tampa, Fla.; his brother-in-law, Joseph Kilch of Burlington, Vt.; and his grandmother-in-law, Iva Robinson of White Head Island, New Brunswick and Tampa, Fla.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Charles and Marion Gaffney; and his maternal grandfather, Dr. John C. Lantman, MD.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church Street, Augusta.
