Hampden man dies in snowmobile crash near Hermon Pond

HERMON, Maine — A Hampden man died as the result of a snowmobile crash near Hermon Pond Saturday night, according to Maine game wardens.

Austin Gardiner, 41, died when the snowmobile he was operating struck several trees near the shoreline of Hermon Pond at about 9:15 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a press release from Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service.

Gardiner was riding with a 15-year-old male who was on another snowmobile behind him. Gardiner was operating a 2002 Polaris Indy Edge 500. Game wardens say speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in this crash.

Assisting with the incident were Hampden police, Hampden Rescue and Hermon Rescue.

No further information was immediately available. The crash remains under investigation.

It is the sixth snowmobile fatality in Maine this season.
