YORK, Maine — A South Portland man faces felony theft charges for allegedly carrying out an appliance repair scam in several York County towns.

George Healey, 65, is accused of taking up-front payments for appliance repair then never performing the work, York police said in a press release.

“Based on the estimate, the victim would pay Healey up front for the parts and labor and Healey would leave the home, go cash the check and never return to finish the job,” Detective Sgt. Thomas Cryan said.

York detectives found numerous complaints about Healey in York and neighboring communities. The number of confirmed victims was not available Thursday. Attempts to reach Cryan for additional information Thursday were not successful.

York police charged Healey with three counts of theft by deception on Thursday. Wells and Ogunquit police also charged him with theft by deception amid similar allegations in those communities.

Healey apparently worked under the business names Ateck Appliance, AH Appliance, George Healy Plumber and D&G Appliance.

He is due in York County Superior Court at 8:30 a.m. on May 1 to answer the charge.
