Fire investigators probe Machias restaurant shed blaze

By Tim Cox, BDN Staff

MACHIAS, Maine — Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office were scheduled Thursday to visit the scene of a fire that caused heavy damage to a utility building at the McDonald’s restaurant in Machias.

The restaurant is located on U.S. 1 in an area with other nearby businesses and shopping centers, and flames and smoke pouring from the shed quickly drew onlookers Wednesday afternoon. The building, used to store supplies, is located a short distance from the restaurant.

The fire appeared to have originated at the rear of the shed, Don Hicks, a Machias Fire Department dispatcher, said Thursday. The building was considered a total loss, he said.

Several propane tanks are located immediately behind the building, and firefighters who responded to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. attacked flames from the rear of the shed in order to prevent them from spreading toward the tanks.

Firefighters attacked the flames from three sides and brought the blaze under control after about 30 minutes.
