MOUNT DESERT ISLAND — The host team from Mount Desert Island High School of Bar Harbor claimed the girls championship, while Winslow claimed the boys title in the high school division during the 22nd Great Harbor Shoot-Out basketball tournament held last weekend.
Nearly 90 girls and boys junior high school and high school basketball teams participated in the weekend event, which was the largest in the tournament’s history.
“Harbor House would especially like to thank all of the staff and volunteers for putting together another terrific tournament,” tournament executive director Ingrid Wilbur Kachmar said in a press release. “It was a great team effort on everyone’s part. We would also like to thank Chris Popper for airing the final four game details through WDEA AM 1370.”
In the high school division finals played at Pemetic Elementary School, the MDI girls won with a 68-54 victory over Lawrence High School of Fairfield. The Black Raiders from Winslow took home the boys trophy with an 87-82 win against Houlton.
The Icebreakers, a combination team from Brewer and Hampden, emerged with the championship in the junior high school girls division played at MDI High School. They edged the Glenburn Sparks 35-33.
Junior high boys honors went to the Elite from Glenburn who posted a 50-37 win over the Auburn Lumberjacks.
“This was the biggest tournament we have ever held. Thousands of people attended, and we would like to again thank everyone — the event sponsors, teams, venue hosts, and all of the staff and volunteers who helped make everything flow smoothly,” said Diana Novella, event coordinator.
