BELFAST, Maine — Police responding to a disturbance call at a High Street apartment early Saturday morning found a chaotic scene, with one officer suffering a sprained wrist and shoulder while wrestling a woman both into and out of a cruiser.

According to Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham of the Belfast Police Department, Bethany Wickham, 37, and Jedediah Wasilewski, 35, both of Belfast, had begun arguing over Wickham’s ex-boyfriend. The argument escalated, with Wasilewski pushing Wickham and then Wickham punching Wasiewski, according to police.

“A third party stepped in to stop it, and [Wasilewski] grabbed the third party by the throat, and pressed him against the wall,” Cunningham said.

Then a fourth person entered the fray — this time, it was the apartment manager, Cunningham said.

“Mr. Wasilewski got in his face and threatened him, so the manager maced him,” he said.

When officers arrived, they found that Wasilewski had kicked the door out of his own apartment, in order to get to the shower to wash the mace out of his eyes.

Police arrested Wasilewski, and while they were taking him to their cruiser, Wickham came out of the building, demanding that Wasilewski return a cellphone to her. She began to yell at the police while they were getting the cellphone, Cunningham said, and allegedly tried to impede Wasilewski’s arrest.

“We arrested her, too,” he said. “They had to wrestle her in and wrestle her out of the cruiser.”

Officer Dan Fitzpatrick suffered a sprained wrist and shoulder while he was trying to get Wickham out of the vehicle.

Wickham was charged with disorderly conduct, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, obstructing government administration and assault.

Wasilewski was charged with assault, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, disorderly conduct and domestic violence assault.

Both were taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast to be booked.
