TROY, Maine — Bail has been set at $50,000 cash for a Troy man accused of hitting his brother on the head with a piece of exhaust pipe during a family get-together last week after the death of another sibling.

Steven Hodgdon, 48, had met up with his brother and an unrelated woman on March 12, because of their recent loss, according to Lt. Jason Trundy of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

“They decided they were going to have a few drinks, and over the course of those drinks, apparently the conversation led them to begin to argue,” Trundy said Tuesday. “At some point, Mr. Hodgdon produced a knife and made some threats to the young lady. Then he made some threats to his brother.”

The brother asked Hodgdon to leave, but he refused, Trundy said. Then the brother tried to physically escort him from the home, the lieutenant said. Hodgdon allegedly grabbed a two-inch piece of exhaust pipe from the foyer and used it to strike his brother on the head several times.

After the alleged assault, Hodgdon left the home. Trundy said that police and rescue units responded to an emergency call, and the brother was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The brother was treated for injuries that included cuts to his head. He was later released.

Police interviewed the injured brother, the young woman, and then several other people who had been told about the alleged pipe attack. Police looked for Hodgdon for a couple of days but did not find him.

Hodgdon turned himself in Saturday to Waldo County Jail in Belfast, where he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

A jail official said Tuesday that he remained in police custody at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where he had been transferred.
