Business bankers work with every sector of Maine economy

More Maine business owners than ever are relying on Machias Savings Bank to provide the banking services they need.

“Our focus is the state of Maine,” said Executive Vice President James Donnelly. “We are invested in the business community in Maine and are committed to helping our customers be successful.”

Across the state, MSB business bankers work with business owners to analyze their needs and recommend appropriate solutions. Each business banker “manages a relationship with a customer,” which could be a business involved any aspect of the Maine economy, such agriculture, fishing, manufacturing, transportation, construction, or the service sector, according to Donnelly.

Working with the business bankers are other MSB professionals. For example, the cash-management solutions team serves more than 400 business customers, said Lisa Phillips, vice president and cash management solutions manager.

According to Phillips, her team provides customers with such services as credit-card processing, online banking, remote capture, positive pay, and payroll services. These services are available directly through Machias Savings or the Bank’s vendor partners “that share our focus on customer service,” she said.

Her team “partners with our business banking team to provide the solutions our customers need,” Phillips said. Such solutions often involve new technology; one member of Phillips’s team installs the technology and trains a customer’s employees in its use.

With six members, the MSB cash management team “is one of the largest, if not the largest cash-management team of a bank our size in Maine,” Phillips said. While based in Brewer, team members cover the entire state of Maine —

— and so do MSB’s business bankers. After opening locations in Caribou, Presque Isle and Lincoln in mid-December 2013, the bank introduced its business banking services to central Aroostook County customers.

“We were looking for an opportunity to serve more customers in Aroostook County, which really fits Machias Savings Bank,” Donnelly said. The bank, which has operated a branch in Houlton for many years, has assigned two business bankers, as well as a member of Senior Management to Aroostook County.

And this past January, Machias Savings opened a Business Banking Center in Portland. “We have grown our customer base in the area to a point that we needed to have a team closer” to southern Maine “to assure that we can continue to provide the high-quality service levels they have enjoyed from of us,” Donnelly said.

“Machias Savings Bank has a larger percentage of loans to small and medium businesses of any bank in the state,” he said.

“Eighty percent of our new customers are referred by existing customers. Our customers tell their friends and business acquaintances about our high level of customer service, high-tech services, providing customer solutions, and our responsiveness,” Donnelly said.

“When you need a banker, we’re just a phone call away,” he said.
