MACHIAS, Maine — An Addison man has been acquitted of two charges in connection with an alleged domestic assault on his girlfriend.
A Washington County Superior Court jury found Timothy Merchant, 49, not guilty of domestic violence assault and criminal mischief following a daylong trial on Friday, March 14.
Merchant was accused of punching his girlfriend in the face — she lived with him at the time — in an incident that occurred in April 2013. The criminal mischief charge accused him of breaking her eyeglasses.
The woman and state trooper Keith York testified for the prosecution. Merchant testified and denied the claims.
Defense attorney Jeffrey Davidson argued that Merchant did not punch the woman, but if there had been any contact it was justifiable self-defense.
