WESTFIELD, Maine — A California man escaped injury on Saturday evening after the tractor-trailer he was driving left the road and skidded into a small stream.

State Police Sgt. Brian Harris said the accident took place at approximately 11 p.m. on U.S. Route 1.

According to Harris, Josef Vencek, 70, of California, was southbound on the roadway when he lost control of his 2005 Freightliner tractor-trailer as he was hauling a load of paper. Vencek’s truck and trailer then jackknifed and skidded off the opposite side of the roadway, striking a guardrail and skidding backward off the road over the embankment into a small stream.

Vencek was not injured in the crash. His truck and trailer are considered a total loss after sustaining extensive damage.

Trooper Shawn Whalen assisted with the accident investigation.
