Providence eliminates Maine in Hockey East quarterfinal series

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence College eliminated Maine 4-2 with a second straight victory in a Hockey East quarterfinal series Saturday night at Schneider Arena.

Maine’s Ben Hutton scored a power-play goal  at 3:18 for a 1-0 lead. Assists  to Brice O’Connor and Devin Shore.

Providence ties it at 11:20 on Nick Saracino’s power-play goal. Assists to Steve Shamanski and Shane Luke.

Providence takes a 2-1 lead on another Saracino power-play goal at 15:01. Assists to Trevor Mingoia and Shamanski.

Providence leads 2-1 at the end of the first period.

Derek Army scores for Providence at 11:29 in the second period for a 3-1 lead. Assist to Noel Acciari.

Dan Sullivan replaces Martin Ouellette in the Maine goal.

With a two-man advantage, Providence’s Ross Mauermann scores at 4:24 to give the Friars a 4-1 lead. Assists to Mingoia and Anthony Florentino.

Providence leads at the end of the second period 4-1. Maine has 1:35 remaining on a power play when the third period begins.

Maine cuts the lead to 4-2 when Steven Swavely scores with 17:15 left in the third period. Assist to O’Connor. Ouellette re-enters the game for Sullivan, who has an equipment problem.

Providence beats Maine 4-2.
