WHITING – Edwin J. Cates Jr. of Whiting, died peacefully in the company of family on Feb. 20, 2014. He was 87.

Born to Edwin Cates, Sr. and Lucy (Dyer) Lindsey on July 28, 1926, in East Machias, he graduated from Fryeburg Academy and earned a Forestry degree from University of Maine.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Ed served as an Aviation Ordnanceman (nose gunner) in border patrol planes from 1944 until his Honorable Discharge in 1946.

Joining Great Northern Paper Company in 1952 Ed was promoted up the ranks until his retirement from GNP with 35 years of service.

He was a skilled sailor, an avid reader, and woodsman. He joined the National Ski Patrol in 1940 and was later a Founder and the first President of Lonesome Pines Trails Ski Area in Fort Kent. Ed was a Brother of Warren Lodge No. 2 in East Machias and was Whiting’s Fire Warden for many years.

He was predeceased by a sister, Maryanne Fleming; and his first wife, Elizabeth (Dennison) Cates.

Edwin leaves his wife of 32 years, Ellen; two sons, Dale Cates and his wife, Terri, and Glenn Cates and his wife, Melissa; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Kristen, Taylor, and Nicole; stepgranddaughter, Leia Scotton; great-grandchildren, Colbin and Cambrie; and two stepdaughters, Kathy Garcelon and her husband, David, and Elizabeth Sprague.
