Leaders looking to attract young people to Lincoln approve student video plan

LINCOLN, Maine — Some Northern Penobscot County Tech students will add to their portfolios by producing marketing videos aimed at drawing more young people to town, officials said Thursday.

The Town Council agreed during a meeting at the Region III school on Monday to allow the students to proceed with the project, Chairman Steve Clay said. No vote was taken.

Town Manager William Lawrence will meet with student groups within several weeks to cull their ideas and see what fits best, Clay said.

“I think it is a great idea. Anything to promote Lincoln is good, and it also promotes Region III and what it can do for the area,” Clay said Thursday.

Sylvia Crocker, a Mattanawcook Academy student and Lincoln resident who attends the Region III video production class, said the students might end up creating several videos before picking the best of the bunch. She hopes to learn more lighting and animation techniques from the work.

“I am assuming it will probably take about a week of classes,” said Crocker, who attends the six-hour class every other day during a typical school week.

Lawrence advocated the video production plan among 13 ideas he has for getting more people to come to or stay in Lincoln, which, like most of northern Maine, is suffering from an exodus of its youth. He is working to draw young people into the area with Bangor City Council Chairman Ben Sprague, who announced his 38 ideas for keeping or drawing young people to Bangor about two weeks before Lawrence announced his list.

The students already have produced a commercial for a local senior center and videos on Region III activities, Crocker said. The students showed some of that work to the council during the meeting and councilors toured the school afterward.
