HANOVER, Maine — A 58-year-old Mexico man was killed Friday in a head-on collision on Route 2, Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant has confirmed.

Arland Burgess was traveling west at about 3:40 p.m. when he apparently lost control of his 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo on a slush-covered stretch of Route 2, Gallant said.

The car spun around a few times, ending up in the path of an eastbound, fully loaded logging truck driven by 29-year-old David Abbott of West Paris, who driving a truck owned by Coffin Trucking Co., also of West Paris, Gallant said.

Gallant said it appeared that Burgess died on impact. Though he did not appear to have suffered injuries, Abbott was taken to Rumford Hospital as a precaution.

The affected section of Route 2 will be closed to traffic until Friday night to accommodate accident reconstruction efforts. Truck traffic is being rerouted to Intervale Road while passenger vehicles are being diverted via Davis Road, Gallant said.

Deputies from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office are being assisted at the scene by personnel from the Maine State Police and members of the Rumford, Newry and Andover fire departments, Gallant said.
