ROCKLAND, Maine — Regional School Unit 13 has changed the schedule of three meetings at which officials will provide the public with information and accept comments concerning the proposed merger of its two middle schools.

The winter storm that struck Wednesday night forced the postponement of the previously scheduled Rockland meeting, and a meeting set for Cushing was changed because it was scheduled for the same night as the Cushing town meeting.

The issue has been controversial within the district, with former Superintendent Lew Collins saying earlier this year that the consolidation was needed to lessen an expected gap of $1.7 million between expected expenses and revenues. Opponents say the district is moving too quickly.

The merger would put all fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade students at Rockland District Middle School.

The merger meetings are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Thomaston Grammar School; 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at the Cushing Community School; and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Rockland District Middle School.
