The New England Patriots were in the market for a cornerback after free agent Aqib Talib signed with the Denver Broncos on Tuesday.

Less than 24 hours later, the Patriots have landed one of the top players at that position in the game.

Numerous media sources, including ESPN, were reporting Wednesday night that New England and free agent cornerback Darrelle Revis had agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract.

According to ESPN, the deal is contingent upon Revis passing a physical and signing a contract, but when consummated it would help him maintain the distinction as the highest-paid corner in the NFL.

Revis, 28, had been released Wednesday by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who could not reach an agreement with the five-time Pro Bowl selection. They reportedly cut him to avoid paying him a $1.5 million bonus and his $16 million salary.

The Bucs had obtained Revis last spring from the New York Jets in a trade that cost Tampa Bay a 2013 first-round draft pick and a fourth-rounder this year.

ESPN also reported that Cleveland and Oakland had been in discussions with Tampa Bay about the possibility of obtaining Revis.

Last season, despite coming off reconstructive knee surgery, Revis made 50 tackles in 16 games and came up with two interceptions on his way to another Pro Bowl.
