Hubert R. Lewis

ABBOT – Hubert Raymond Lewis Sr., 81, went to sleep peacefully March 10, 2014, at a Dexter nursing home, with his loving wife of 60 years by his side, holding his hand, after she told him it was ok to go and be with the Lord. Hubert was born Jan. 14, 1933, in Skowhegan, the son of Harold and Odile (St. Germain) Lewis.
As a child he attended parochial school in Skowhegan. His family then moved to North Dexter where he continued his schooling for two years. He then quit school to help his dad with his masonry business. In later years he earned his GED while he was employed by SAD No. 4. Hubert was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed at William O’Darby Caserne in Furth, Germany. He served from February 1953 to February 1955. When he came home on a two week furlough before going to Germany he married Ethel Hanscom on Sept. 5, 1953, and on Sept. 7, 1953, he left for Germany; he returned home in 1955. While in the Army he worked in the Post Office and much enjoyed his time there. In his free time he was able to visit Holland, Rome, Paris, and Venice. He loved sharing his pictures and stories with family and friends. Hubert loved doing crossword puzzles. He was an avid reader and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He especially enjoyed working his firewood, cutting and splitting, and stacking in particular. Every stick had to be just so. He loved driving his John Deere tractor. He worked at Guilford Industries for nine years. He then moved on to work as a custodian for SAD No. 4. Hubert then took a job at Moosehead Manufacturing for 20 years, retiring in 1996.
Hubert is survived by his wife, Ethel (Hanscom) Lewis of Abbot; his children, Victoria Bedard of Belgrade, Hubert Lewis Jr. of Monson, and Timothy Lewis and his wife, Dorian, of Boise, Idaho; and his grandchildren, Travis Bedard and fiancée, Laura Childs, of Belgrade, Joseph Bedard and his wife, Danielle, of Belgrade, Hunter Lewis and Hayden Lewis, both of Boise, Idaho. On April 13, 2013, he was blessed with a great-granddaughter, Ann Marie Bedard of Belgrade, daughter of Joseph and Danielle. Hubert also leaves two brothers, Ralph Lewis of Dover-Foxcroft, and Clarence Lewis and his wife, Terry, of Manchester, Conn.; and a sister, Charlene Randall of Bangor. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Betty Lou Lewis; two half sisters, Jeanette Merrill, and Lena Savage; a half brother, Harold Lewis Jr.; and a son-in-law, Raymond Bedard.
Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 14, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at First Baptist Church of Dexter, with Pastor Jay Brennan officiating. Burial will be at Lawn Cemetery, Guilford, in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Vacation Bible School Program, care of First Baptist Church of Dexter, 5 Main Street Hill, Dexter, ME 04930; or to the Activities Program, Dexter Health Care, 64 Park St., Dexter, ME 04930.
