PORTLAND, Maine — The windows of as many as eight cars were shot out by pellet or BB guns during a three-hour midnight stretch from Monday into Tuesday, Portland police said Wednesday.

Lt. James Sweatt of the Portland Police Department said in a Wednesday afternoon news release that investigators are looking for members of the public to report anything suspicious they may have witnessed during the period in question.

Sweatt said five of the cars were damaged on Emery Street, one on Spring Street and two on Birchwood Drive. Sweatt said the car windows were broken on the street sides of the vehicles, and the damage was done between 11 p.m. Monday and 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Damage to the cars is estimated to total more than $4,000, Sweatt said.

“We are requesting anyone that observed anything suspicious in these areas or has information about these crimes to contact the Portland Police Department,” he said in Wednesday’s release.

People can leave tips anonymously by visiting the department website www.portland-police.com, calling 874-8584 or by texting the keyword “GOTCHA,” plus a message, to 274637.
