ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine football program on Tuesday announced the death of former Black Bear Dominic Cusano.

The 26-year-old native of Wallingford, Conn., died unexpectedly on Sunday, according to a release published on GoBlackBears.com.

“All of us are saddened to learn of the death of Dominic Cusano,” UMaine head coach Jack Cosgrove said in a statement. “Our prayers go out to his father David, mother Zoraida and brothers David, a member of our 2001-02 Atlantic 10 championship team, and Pasquale.

“We all have a special memory of Dom,” Cosgrove added. “Under-recruited because he was undersized, Dom played bigger than he was. His achievements at the University of Maine as a student-athlete were exemplary. He earned our utmost respect through his competitive nature. He greatly impacted ‘Black Bear Football’ during his time here.”

Cusano played in 30 games with the Black Bears from 2007 to 2011. He recorded 104 tackles, eight pass breakups and one interception on the football field. He also competed in track and field.

Cusano graduated in May 2010 with a degree in kinesiology and physical education before earning his master’s of eucation degree in kinesiology and physical education in 2012. Cusano received the Presidential Achievement award in the fall of 2009 and attained a scholar-athlete silver medallion.

Cusano, born Nov. 5, 1987, to David and Zoraida Cusano, came to the University of Maine from Wallingford, Conn., where he played football for coach John Ferrazzi at Sheehan High School. There, he earned all-league and all-state honors.

Cusano is survived by two brothers, Dave and Pasquale. His older brother, Dave, played football at UMaine from 1999 to 2002 and graduated in 2003 while earning first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors.
