Jerel Kim Higgins

ELLSWORTH – Jerel Kim Higgins, 58, died March 7, 2014. Kim was born June 5, 1955, in Bangor, the son of Roland Peter and Patricia Haynes Higgins.
Kim graduated from Ellsworth High School, class of 1973 and the University of Maine with a degree in Agri-Business Economics. His earliest work as grocery store manager sent him to many different stores in Maine and New Hampshire. The longest of those management years brought he and Karen to the small Maine coastal town of Boothbay Harbor to work and live. Other assignments for the First National Store grocery chain were to Belfast, his very first store and Rockland, then on to work for Hannaford Supermarkets in Lancaster, N.H., and Millinocket. From his management experiences and coworkers to the ever important customers that walked through those doors everyday….they were special and important and he loved them all. He moved on to work at Jasper Wyman & Son as Director of Industrial and Export Sales where he began a long lasting relationship with yet another family, the Wyman family, their Downeast blueberry company, their team of people in the office, in the plants and on the fields…..all were, once again, special and important in his life. He took great pride in working with customers and brokers worldwide and very much appreciated the opportunities and support the company offered him. Kim loved the outdoors. He spent summers at his family’s camp where he grew to love fishing, boating, skiing and the sunsets. And then he taught his own family who, in turn, would grow to love it just the same. He cherished “Holy Week,” an annual hunting week in the north Maine woods, a time spent with his brother, Kevin and all his other “brothers.” He would share these woods experiences with his children, and as Sam grew, so did his love for the woods and hunting camp. Kayla’s life would allow Kim to begin a number of cherished years following and supporting her love of sports.
He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Karen Ann Goldberg Higgins; his son, Samuel Charles Higgins; daughter, Kayla Rae Higgins Mitchell and her husband, Chris; and his mother, Patricia Haynes Higgins. He was predeceased by his father, Roland. He is also survived by his twin brother, John Kevin Higgins and his wife, Cathy; his sisters, Kathi Higgins, and Kristin Higgins Wilbur and her fiancé, Bart Wasson; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunt, and cousins, who were always a very special part of his life as family was so very important to him. Anytime that there was an opportunity to help, he was there with open arms, an open home and always an open heart.
Friend’s are invited to celebrate Kim’s love for life 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Ellsworth Masonic Lodge, 22 Carraige Road, Ellsworth. Donations in Kim’s memory made be made to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, 50 Union St., Ellsworth, ME 04605; or to Ross Manor, 758 Broadway, Bangor ME 04401.
