BREWER – Joyce M. Howe RN, 79, wife of Robert L. Howe, died Jan. 12, 2014, at home. She was born Oct. 28, 1934, in Seal Harbor, daughter of Shirley L. and Dorothy B. (Avery) MacCrae.

As a young woman, Joyce committed herself to what became a 50-year-long nursing career, which began upon being “capped” as a registered nurse at Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in 1955.

As a student nurse, Joyce often joined her colleagues to knit such items as Argyle socks. After retirement Joyce continued her passion for knitting. In fact, she could be seen knitting while she waited anywhere and everywhere. She became known to colleagues, friends and family as a consummate knitter of sweaters, mittens, scarves, Christmas stockings and even coats; although she most enjoyed the challenge of taming some of the most intricate sock patterns.

Surviving, besides her husband of 58 years, are sister, Martha L. Stepp of Newburgh; and two daughters, Melissa MacCrae and husband, David Priesing, of Brewer, and Jessica Treworgy Favor DVM, and husband, Mark Favor, of Glenburn. “Grammy” lavished love and care upon her grandchildren, Lucas Forsing and Dimitrje Howe Poteet; and special nephews, Andrew Stepp, and Matthew Stepp; great-nieces, Mackenzie Stepp, and Morgan Stepp; and great-nephew, Harper Stepp.

She was predeceased by her son, Michael R. Howe of Levant.

Per her wishes, Joyce was cremated, and her ashes will be buried in early spring, when a celebration of her life will be held at Woodland Memorial Park, North Main Street, Brewer, surrounded by friends, family, and her favorite pansies. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Care of Maine, care of Eastern Maine Healthcare Foundation, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402-0931. Arrangements made by Kiley & Foley Funeral Services, 69 State St., Brewer.
