Estelle ‘Mim’ Church Chipman

BIRCH HARBOR – Estelle “Mim” Church Chipman left this earth on March 6, 2014, a happy and content person having tried to live as God would want. She cared for her family, loving them at all times.

She was born in Bunkers Harbor on June 15, 1924, and moved with her parents before she was three years old to Birch Harbor. She spent the remainder of her life in a home that she and her husband, Avery, built on land that was given to them by her father. She was the second child of Joshua Colon and Adella Temple Church. She graduated Winter Harbor High School in 1942 and married the love of her life, Avery Vance Chipman on November 16, the same year. She raised her four children in that same house.

She loved to crochet, knit, and sew, especially for her children and grandchildren. She was Postmaster for 24 years in Birch Harbor. She also was Sunday School Superintendent of the Birch Harbor Baptist Church for 35 years, was a dedicated member and was instrumental in the new vestry being built, which her son Jim did for her.

She was predeceased by her parents, Joshua Colon and Adella Temple Church; brothers, Colon, Denton, and Edison Church; a sister, Violace Lindsey; and a grandson, Michael Vance Chipman. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Avery; one brother, Newman Birchard Church and wife, Gloria; two sons, James Edgar, and Merton Vance and his wife, Peggy; two daughters, Jean Elaine Bridges and husband, Richard, and Susan Estelle Scott, all of Birch Harbor; grandchildren, Timothy Edward and wife, Marwa, of Cairo, Egypt, Tammi Jean and Lance Alba of Portland, Ore., John Arthur Harland Iverson Chipman and friend, Michelle Rafferty, of Surry, Lisa Marie Young and friend, Arthur Hammond, of Southwest Harbor, Stephen Avery Chipman and wife, Tracy, U.S. Coast Guard of Yorktown, Va., Joshua Thomas Bridges and wife, Megan, of Hermon, Crystal Estelle Bridges and wife, Michelle Spriggs, of Dover, N.H., and Avery Alton Scott and wife, Stacey Marie, of Birch Harbor; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Jacob, Jessica, Joshua, Dakota, Mckenzie, Shelby, Serena, Brady, Jordyn, Jed, Landan, and Blake; great-great-grandchild, Gabrial Alexander; stepgrandchildren, Courtney and wife, Melissa, Jasmine and husband, Joe, Cindy Tracy, Tammy, JR, Michael and Bobby; stepgreat-grandchildren, Alan Wayne, Gerald Robert, Kaitlyn Louise, Brooklyn Edith, Holly Marie, Dunovan Riley, Xavier and Alexia; three wonderful ladies that were like daughters, LaNeta, Cindy, and Nancy; several nieces, and nephews; and special people in her life, Annabelle, Jillaine, Cheryl, Allison, Leslie, Craig, Joyce, Ron and Nancy, Bill and Nicole, Elijah, Benjamin and Elizabeth.

Visiting house will be 6-8 p.m. Monday evening at Bragdon Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge. Services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, at Birch Harbor Baptist Church. Reception to follow at the Masonic Hall in Winter Harbor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Birch Harbor Baptist Church, 65 East Schoodic Drive, Birch Harbor, ME 04613.
