Errors plague UMaine baseball team in Saturday losses

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLa. — The University of Maine baseball team committed seven errors on Saturday, contributing to two losses.

The Black Bears dropped a 12-5 decision to Presbyterian and lost 5-2 to South Dakota State.

In Saturday’s first game, UMaine (3-10) committed five errors that opened the door for eight unearned runs in a loss to Presbyterian.

The Blue Hose (7-7-1) scored six times in the fourth inning to break the game open. Brad Zebedis drove in four runs with a double and a single and Derek Long posted two singles and three RBIs for the winners, who had 11 hits and drew five walks.

Chandler Knox (3-1) scattered five hits and two runs over the first six innings to pick up the win.

Troy Black singled twice with an RBI and Shane Bussey hit two singles to lead UMaine. Pat Coughlin had a single and two RBIs and Alex Calbick had a single and drove in a run.

Starter Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (0-1) took the loss for the Bears, allowing four hits and six runs (two earned) with three walks in 3 ⅓ innings.

Presbyterian led 2-1 going into the fourth, when Cam McRae walked and Brandon Paul singled. Brandon Martin reached on a throwing error by catcher Jon Salcedo as the first run scored.

Jacob Midkiff followed with a sacrifice fly, then Gosselin-Deschesnes walked Billy Motroni and Long singled home a run. Burk FitzPatrick came on in relief and, after getting an out on the front end of a double steal, Tyler Weyenberg singled home a run.

FitzPatrick sandwiched wild pitches around a walk, setting up Zebedis’ two-run double to make it 8-1.

In Saturday’s second game, a throwing error resulted in one of two eighth-inning runs that gave South Dakota State the margin of victory.

Jordan Varga (RBI) doubled twice and Al Robbins hit two singles, while Eric Danforth singled with two RBIs for the 8-5 Jackrabbits. Chris Anderson (1-1) pitched seven innings and gave up only five hits and one run with six strikeouts and a walk.

Black stroked a double and two singles, Brian Doran doubled with an RBI and Kyle Silva had a single and two RBIs. Senior Shaun Coughlin bounced back from a three-run first inning and limited SDSU to five hits and three runs with three walks and a strikeout in six innings.

Varga hit a run-scoring single and Danforth provided a two-run single in the Jackrabbits first inning. UMaine countered with a run in the fourth when Silva’s grounded scored Gay (single).

SDSU tacked on two runs in the eighth. Robbins greeted reliever Jeff Gelinas of Saco with a single and moved to third on Gelinas’ throwing error. On the ensuing bunt, another Gelinas miscue resulted in a run.

Cody Sharrow followed with a sacrifice fly.

UMaine scored twice in the eighth on consecutive, two-out doubles by Black and Doran and Silva’s RBI single.
