Clement sparks West A/B girls by East at McDonald’s senior games; each region wins two games

BANGOR, Maine — Miss Maine Basketball Allie Clement of McAuley High School scored 21 points Saturday morning to lead the Classes A/B West girls team to an 83-44 victory over the East A/B squad at the Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games held in Newman Gymnasium at Husson University in Bangor.

Tiana-Jo Carter of Lake Region High in Naples scored 16 points for the West.

Leading the East scoring was Anna MacKenzie of Nokomis High of Newport with 10 points followed by Hannah Shaw of Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor with seven points.

Clement also won the Girls 3-Point Shoot-Out, hitting 10 shots. Kory Norcross of Edward Little in Auburn and Morgan Thompson of Schenck High in Millinocket tied for second place, each sinking 9 3-pointers.

In the Classes C/D game, Raychel Alley of Stearns High in Millinocket scored 17 points to help the East all-stars post a 73-68 victory over the West squad.

Parise Rossignol of Van Buren tossed in 13 points for the East.

Teagan Laweryson of Valley High School in Bingham sparked the West contingent with 12 points. Kelly Pomerleau of Saint Dominic Academy in Auburn provided 10 points.

The respective regions also split in the boys’ games held Saturday afternoon.

Jacob Rioux of Van Buren connected for a team-high 25 points to power the East Classes C/D all-star to a 113-105 victory over the West squad.

Cherif Fall of Lee Academy connected for 20 points in the winning effort for the East, which knocked down 10 3-pointers.

Warsame Mohamed poured in a game-leading 27 points to propel the West ballclub. Joey Gildard of Old Orchard Beach tallied 24 points.

In the Classes A/B contest, Jayvon Pitts-Young of Portland High and Jake Moody of Wells tossed in 20 points each to spearhead the West all-stars to a 143-115 win over the East.

Mr. Maine Basketball Dustin Cole of Bonny Eagle High School in Buxton posted 19 points for the West.

Zach Gilpin of Hampden Academy carried the East all-stars with 26 points while Tyler Thayer of Hermon scored 20 points.

Nick Burton of Falmouth won the Slam Dunk Competition.

The 2014 All-Star games mark McDonald’s 26th year as lead sponsor of this event. The Maine McDonald’s Owner/Operator Association and the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches direct the tournament and the awards banquet.

Free throw champs crowned

Garvey Melmed of Old Town and Emily Keene of Spruce Mountain earned titles during Saturday’s Maine State Foul Shooting Championships held at Husson.

Melmed edged Seth McFarland of Gardiner in a shootout after each sank 47 of 50 foul shots in the competition. In the shootout, Melmed made nine of 10 McFarland hit eight.

Brendan Newcomb of Brewer and Erik Hogan of Old Orchard Beach were the other boys finalists.

Emily Keene of Spruce Mountain won the girls contest by making 44 of 50 free throws. Carmen Bragg of Washburn was the runner-up after converting 43 of 50.

Cordelia Stewart of Bangor and Sara Carder of Gray-New Gloucester also reached the championship round in the girls competition.
