NEW PORTLAND, Maine — A 57-year-old Massachusetts man was killed Friday evening when the snowmobile he was driving was struck by a truck on Route 27.

Robert J. Peavey of Gloucester, Mass., was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a media release from Chief Deputy Dale P. Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

An initial investigation into the crash determined that Peavey, operating a 2003 Rotax 600 Ski-Doo, left a snowmobile trail and attempted to cross Route 27 in front of a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck headed south on Route 27.

The driver of the truck, Leroy Hiscock, 69, of Livermore Falls, was unable to stop and struck the snowmobile, according to Lancaster.

Hiscock was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington for unspecified injuries. His sole passenger, a 7-year-old boy, was not injured. One of two dogs in the truck was killed in the crash.

The snowmobile was totaled and the pickup truck had extensive front-end damage. The investigation continues, according to Lancaster, and the Maine State Police will reconstruct the crash.
