ROCKPORT, Maine — The long-time executive director of Waldo County’s health care facilities will add the job of interim chief executive officer for Pen Bay Healthcare.
The announcement was made Friday afternoon in a news release issued by Pen Bay.
Mark Biscone, executive director of Waldo County Healthcare, will serve as the transitional CEO for Pen Bay upon the departure of Wade Johnson, according to Pen Bay Board Chairman Everett Spear III. Biscone will take over those duties on March 14.
Johnson announced last week that he was returning to Idaho to take a job in healthcare management. He has been the chief executive officer and president of Pen Bay for two years.
Biscone has been the head of the health care system in Waldo County that includes the 25-bed Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast for more than 30 years.
“The Executive Committee and the full Board of Trustees discussed the need to have an experienced healthcare administrator during this transition and to ensure that performance improvement efforts begun over the past several months continue to achieve the results expected by the Board,” Spear stated in the news release.
Biscone will work with Pen Bay Chief Operating Officer Erik Frederick to assure seamless leadership continuity, Spear said.
Waldo County and Pen Bay Health are both part of the MaineHealth system, which includes Maine Medical Center in Portland. Pen Bay became part of MaineHealth a little more than three years ago.
The Pen Bay board plans to create a committee and hire a consulting firm to assist in a national search for a new CEO, the news release stated. The process is expected to take six months.
Pen Bay Health includes the 99-bed Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, the Knox Center for Long-Term Care in Rockland, Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice, Quarry Hill Retirement village, and Pen Bay Physicians & Associates which consists of the majority of physician offices in Knox County. Pen Bay consists of more than 100 physicians and more than 1,500 employees.
MaineHealth members also include Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta; Southern Maine Healthcare, which includes the hospital in Biddeford; St. Andrews Hospital and Healthcare Center in Boothbay Harbor; Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway; and several other health care organizations.
