Head-on collision claims life of Mount Vernon woman

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

MONMOUTH, Maine — A Mount Vernon woman was killed Thursday morning in a head-on collision on Route 202, according to police.

Joan Fortier, 67, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was a passenger in a 2006 Hyundai Elantra driven by Gene Potter, 70, also of Mount Vernon, according to Monmouth Police Chief Kevin Mulherin.

The accident occurred at 7:30 Thursday morning, Mulherin said.

Potter’s sedan was heading westbound on Route 202 when an eastbound SUV driven by Alyssa Marcellino, 22, of Winthrop apparently went into the westbound lane, according to Mulherin.

Potter subsequently swerved to avoid a collision, but Marcellino apparently corrected and the vehicles collided head-on, Mulherin said.

Potter and Marcellino suffered injuries not considered life-threatening.

Monmouth and state police are investigating the accident further.
