Rockport police: Black Lab found shot in head near hiking trail

By Stephen Betts, BDN Staff

ROCKPORT, Maine — Rockport police are seeking the public’s help in finding out who shot and killed a dog and left its body near a popular hiking trail.

Craig Cooley, a patrol officer and administrative assistant for the Rockport Police Department, said Wednesday that a woman hiking on Mount Pleasant, about 40 feet off Mount Pleasant Street, found the deceased dog at about 4 p.m. Monday.

The dog was a black Labrador retriever, weighing about 30 pounds. There were no tags nor other form of identification on the animal.

The dog had been shot in the head. A trail of blood was next to the animal.

Cooley said while it is not illegal to shoot your own animal, it must be done humanely with the appropriate caliber weapon and the person needs to be proficient as to not cause the animal to suffer. The officer said, however, it is not legal to dispose of the animal’s body on somebody else’s property.

Anyone with information, including knowing someone who owned a black Lab but no longer does, can call the Rockport Police Department at 236-2027.
