DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — A local man was killed Tuesday morning in an apparent snowmobile accident, officials said.

James Curtis, 48, was out for a ride when he apparently struck a rope at the Piscataquis County Fairgrounds and was ejected, Lt. Kevin Adam of the Maine Warden Service said.

The accident was reported shortly after 8 a.m. when a passerby notified sheriff’s deputies, Adam said.

Dover-Foxcroft police officers converged on the scene and discovered Curtis’ body, the lieutenant said.

The fairgrounds property is posted with no snowmobiling signs.

Game wardens are investigating the crash further, and alcohol does not appear to be a factor, Adam said.
