WALLINGFORD, Conn. – Phyllis Cooley Varney, 89, died Sunday, March 2, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Merlin F. Varney of 65 years. She was born March 24, 1924, in Corinna, a daughter of the late Eugene A. and Hattie Pearl Cooley and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wallingford where she was a member of the Ladies Guild.
She is survived by her daughter, Vicky-Lea Barnes and her husband, Walter, of Wallingford, Conn.; her daughter-in-law, Diane Varney of Wallingford, Conn.; her son-in-law, Jeffrey Smith of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; her seven grandchildren, Donald Anklam, Darren Anklam, David Varney, Christine Whitney, Jayne Sause, William Barnes, and Ryan Barnes; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Ronald J. Varney; her daughter, Gloria Jean Smith; and her brother, Archie Cooley.
A funeral service will be held noon Wednesday, March 5, at Wallingford First Baptist Church, 114 N. Main St., Wallingford, Conn. Her family will receive relatives and friends in the church 11-11:45 a.m. before the service. Interment with military honors will be at In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford, Conn., in the spring.
