Geary’s 5 RBIs propel UMaine baseball team past Stetson

DELAND, Fla. — Brenden Geary knocked in five runs with two doubles and a single Sunday afternoon, sparking the University of Maine baseball team to a 6-3 victory over Stetson in the final game of the Stetson Invitational at Melching Field.

Geary, a sophomore first baseman, stroked a two-run double to headline a three-run second inning, then belted a three-run double to highlight a three-run fifth for the Black Bears, who halted a six-game losing streak.

On Saturday, Iowa edged UMaine 13-12.

In Sunday’s game, Geary provided the offensive punch as the Black Bears (2-7) collected 12 hits. Junior left-hander Scott Heath of Westbrook (2-1) earned the win with five innings of five-hit, three-run ball.

Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes pitched 3 ⅔ shutout innings of relief with four strikeouts before Charlie Butler got the final out for his first save of the season.

Sam Balzano of Portland singled twice with an RBI for UMaine while Colin Gay doubled and singled and Troy Black posted two singles.

Starter Taylor Cockrell (0-2) suffered the loss for Stetson (2-9), giving up eight hits, four walks and six runs in five innings. Tyler Bocock had two singles for the Hatters, while Robert Bruce added an RBI double and Patrick Mazeika had a single and a sacrifice fly.

Trailing 1-0, UMaine took the lead for good in the second inning. Alex Calbick reached on a fielder’s choice, Shane Bussey hit an infield single and both moved up on a passed ball.

Geary doubled to left and later came home on Balzano’s two-out single.

The Bears scored three more in the fifth. Black singled and Silva walked and they advanced on an error. Calbick was walked intentionally and, one out later, Geary delivered a bases-clearing double.

Stetson chased Heath in the sixth and scored twice on McNabb’s sac fly and Bruce’s run-scoring double.

On Saturday, UMaine piled up 19 hits but could not overcome the Hawkeyes.

Silva plated five runs with an RBI single in the first and a grand slam in the second. Gay posted two doubles, two singles and two RBIs and Black knocked in two runs with a pair of single. Brian Doran provided a double and two singles, Heath contributed three singles and on Salcedo added two singles for the Black Bears.

Starter Jake Marks could not get out of the first inning, but it was freshman Jeff Gelinas of Saco who took the loss, allowing five hits and two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Eric Toole and Jake Mangler stroked RBI singles in the ninth for Iowa (9-1). Toole also had two other singles and two more RBIs, while Trevor Kenyon hit a double and a single and drove in three runs. Nick Day chipped in with three singles among 15 hits for the Hawkeyes.

Blake Hickman picked up the pitching win with ⅔ innings of two-hit shutout relief in the ninth, during which UMaine had taken the lead on run-scoring singles by Gay and Black.

The Bears return to action Tuesday against Northeastern at Port Charlotte, Fla.
