MACHIAS – Muriel Foss Flaherty, 85, died Feb. 27, 2014, at Marshall Health Care. She was born Dec. 20, 1928, in Machias, the daughter of the late Maurice and Hazel (Ellsmore) Foss.
She graduated from Machias High School in 1946 and went to work for 16 years at the New England Telephone Company as an operator. In 1948 she married Kenneth Flaherty of Marshfield and they had three children. She retired from Sweetser Children’s Services in 1994 after 21 years as a cook. She was a member of the Saco Nazarene Church and attended the Machias Valley Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Michael of York; her daughter, Kathy Smith of Marshfield; four grandchildren, Ginger McClure of Marion Pa., Matthew Smith and wife, Jennifer, of Marshfield, Rebecca Bosch and husband, Shilo, of Milton, N.H., and Sara Flaherty of Marshfield; ten great-grandchildren, Ashley, Bridget, Dana, Kira, Annalissa, Hailey, Tevin, Camden, Jaden, and Taryn; and one great-great-grandson, Killian. She is also survived her brother, Leeman Foss and his wife, Linda, of Harrison; a sister, Norma Flaherty and husband, Robert, of Marshfield; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Marie Berry; and a son, Patrick Flaherty.
