Old Town’s Garvey Melmed will be one of eight high school basketball players competing to become the state’s free-throw shooting champion as part of the Maine McDonald’s all-star weekend.

The competition will be held 8:30-9 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at Newman Gymnasium on the campus of Husson University in Bangor, just before the start of the Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games.

Melmed made 46 of 50 attempts to win the North Region boys qualifying competition earlier this season, and he will be joined in the state competition by East winner Brendan Newcomb of Brewer, Central qualifier Seth McFarland of Gardiner and South participant Erik Hogan of Old Orchard Beach.

Girls finalists are Carmen Bragg of Washburn (North), Cordelia Stewart of Bangor (East), Emily Keene of Spruce Mountain of Jay (Central) and Sara Carder of Gray-New Gloucester (South).

Keene is the defending girls champion, who made 49 of 50 in last year’s state final. Bragg, the 2011 champion, will be competing in the state shoot-off for the third time during her four-year high school career.

Stewart, a junior center who helped Bangor win the 2013 Eastern Maine Class A championship, qualified despite being unable to play for the Rams this winter as she recovered from a knee injury.

Each contestant will shoot 50 free throws, with the top boys’ and girls’ finishers crowned state champions.

The free-throw shooting contest will be followed by four all-star games matching East and West teams featuring the top high school seniors statewide.

The girls Classes A-B game will begin at 9:15 a.m., followed by C-D girls at 11 a.m., C-D boys at 12:45 p.m. and A-B boys at 2:30 p.m.
