WEST BATH, Maine — A 23-year-old man will serve four years in prison for attempting to choke his pregnant girlfriend, squeezing her midsection and then grabbing their kitten by the throat.

Matthew L. Barrington of Brunswick pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault and one count of cruelty to animals for the incident on July 9, 2013, according to court documents. He was sentenced Jan. 22 to 10 years in prison with all but six years suspended and three years probation.

Barrington’s then-18-year-old girlfriend wrote in an affidavit that she and Barrington were arguing about money at their Topsham home when Barrington held her down, choked her until she couldn’t breathe and squeezed her midsection in what the woman believed was an attempt to injure the fetus. He also held their kitten by its throat in the air until it struggled for breath.

According to court documents, Barrington has a past criminal record.

Among the conditions of Barrington’s sentencing is a prohibition on ever owning animals.
