Free throws carry Stony Brook to victory over UMaine women’s basketball team

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook Seawolves made a living at the foul line, converting 25 of 32 free throws Saturday afternoon on their way to a 73-65 America East women’s basketball victory over the University of Maine at Pritchard Gym.

Sabre Proctor tossed in a game-high 26 points on 10-for-23 floor shooting for the Seawolves, who improved to 20-7 overall, 10-3 in conference play.

Brittany Snow scored 12 points, Jessica Ogunnorin registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Miranda Jenkins chipped in with 10 points for Stony Brook.

The Black Bears shot 39 percent overall, but went only 12-for-20 (60 percent) from the foul line. UMaine, which hit nine 3-pointers, outrebounded Stony Brook 42-39.

The Seawolves also were efficient, committing only four turnovers to UMaine’s 12.

The Bears found themselves playing from behind after spotting Stony Brook a 16-point lead in the first half.

The hosts built an early 21-7 advantage against the cold-shooting Bears. UMaine eventually finished the first half with a 10-2 run that got it back within 43-37 at intermission.

The Bears led as late as the 7:22 mark of the second half after Roberts made two free throws to make it 58-56, but Proctor answered with a conventional three-point play shortly thereafter to put Stony Brook in front for good.

Ogunnorin made a layup, Roberts hit one of two from the foul line, then Chikilra Goodman scored from inside and Ogunnorin made two free throws to put the Seawolves in front 65-59 with 4:57 to play.

UMaine got no closer than four on Weckstrom’s 3-pointer with 41 seconds left.

The Black Bears return to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday against UMass Lowell at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
