A car sits upside down in a ditch off Eastern Avenue in Brewer on Thursday morning.

BREWER, Maine — Wearing her seat belt spared a local woman from serious injury Thursday after her car skidded off Eastern Avenue and flipped upside down into a creek, police said.

Mackenzie McCurdy, 18, lost control of her car shortly after 9:30 a.m., according to Brewer police Cpl. Paul Gauvin.

McCurdy’s vehicle was the only one involved in the accident, McCurdy said. Slushy roads due to Wednesday’s snowstorm were a major factor in the accident.

The corporal said McCurdy likely overcorrected after losing control. The accident occurred near the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Pierce Road.

McCurdy’s vehicle landed upside down in the creek, but she walked away without a scratch after Brewer Rescue personnel checked her out at the scene, Gauvin said.

“I truly believe if she didn’t have her seat belt on, she’d be hurt,” said Gauvin.

Eastern Avenue was closed for an hour while crews got the car out of the creek, the corporal said.
